Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship

Entrenamiento con becas

Centro de Oncología e Instituto de Investigación Helen F. Graham

The one-year Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship includes didactic training (lectures, breast tumor conferences, class work, assigned study, meetings, etc.) and clinical experiences including the weekly Breast Multidisciplinary Clinic, that are carefully structured to provide a balance between clinical work, research, and study.

  • Rotations include not only Breast Surgery, Medical Oncology, Pathology and Breast Imaging, but also Plastic Surgery, Genetics, Outreach, Rehabilitation, Palliative and Supportive Care, Health Psychology, and a robust Research rotation featuring experience in Translational research as well as clinical trial design and participation in national clinical trials.
  • It is anticipated that during the one-year fellowship, the fellow will design and develop at least one research project or clinical protocol in an area of his or her interest, which results in a publication or a poster or oral presentation at a regional or national meeting. A mentor will be identified to assist with developing a project, helping to complete the project and assisting with either the publication and/or presentation.
  • During the Breast Surgery rotation, the fellow will have extensive hands on experience with surgical procedures for benign and malignant disease, and also with image-guided percutaneous breast procedures.

Program Goals

The Fellowship will produce graduates prepared to practice Breast Surgery in either a community or university environment, in a competent and compassionate manner, able to provide evidence – based and cost effective care; and to perform clinical research and teach others patient centered, evidence-based patient care for diseases of the breast.

Descripción general del plan de estudios

It is anticipated that the breast fellow will attend the School of Breast Surgical Oncology, the American Society of Breast Surgeons Annual Meeting, and a meeting of the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology or another national clinical trials group.

Cronograma de guardias

The Breast Surgical Oncology Fellow will not be required to take General Surgery call or Trauma call. He/she will be on call only for breast patients.

Christiana Care’s Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program is accredited by the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) and is designed to provide the knowledge and clinical skills necessary to practice breast surgery in a fully integrated multidisciplinary manor, and to perform image guided breast procedures as well as operative procedures for diagnosis and treatment of breast diseases. Graduate fellows will be fully prepared to go into practice as a Breast Surgeon in either a community or university environment, to create an integrated breast program or breast center, or to pursue further academic training.

Servicios de informática y biblioteca

Fellows are able to access the hospital intranet and the World Wide Web from the more than 1,500 computer terminals that are part of our local area network, as well as by remote access via the Web. Christiana Care patient data, including admission and discharge summaries, all lab data, X-ray, pathology, and operative reports, are available from Cerner’s PowerChart.

Christiana Care’s Radiology Department uses a Picture Archiving Communications System Network (PACSNet) to store digital images of radiological procedures which gives fellows ready remote access as well as access from any hospital terminal.
